A Confederacy of Dunces

White Noise, Don Delillo

A philosopher’s novel, White Noise uncovers the reality we inhabit in its truest form, as a simulacrum. As the reader, we are seeing the world uncovered as nothing but “waves and radiation”; removed from the truth of life and, more ominously, death. Delillo reveals the world through Jack Gladney, two degrees of separation away from the most elemental phenomena that account for each and every one of our own lives. Perhaps, this is how we truly experience… seemingly integrated, but completely alienated.

For those who are unaware of the true socioeconomic plights of our people, this novel is a must read. Its not about the rich, or the truly poor, but about those in limbo; those stuck above the poverty line, but ineligible for any government aid. For those who work to survive, who literally can’t afford to file bankruptcy. Do you ever think about the woman who makes your bed in the hotels that you vacation at?

If you are looking for point or purpose, this is Palahniuk getting at the truest of human faculties in the most oblique way. A hysterical walk through perversion, Snuff places the mirror right in front of our most private parts and, perhaps, this method of writing is the most human of all.
